The managed area has been subdivided in several non-overlapping zones. Operators in the control room have been assigned one or more zones. Each operator remotely supervises and controls the drawbridges in the managed zones by means of remote control and a network of video cameras.

Each operator has her/his own workstation (PC, mariphone). Furthermore, there is a shared videowall presenting a synoptic overview of the actual traffic situation.

Each operator communicates with the ships in his/her assigned zones about the traffic schedule and optimal speed. The operator marks the communicated information in the VSZ system so that the software is able to notify the operator as soon as a new forecast schedule significantly differs from what has been communicated.
